Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and his wife Melinda were the top charitable donors in the United States in 1999, with a gift of over $16 billion given to a single foundation. Gates is the richest man in the world, with a net worth of approximately $100 billion.

Other top donations include Netscape founder Jim Clark, who gave $150 million to Stanford University and William Hewlett, co-found of Hewlett-Packard, who gave $100 million to the Flora Family Foundation.
