We think Apple Computer has a not-so-secret admirer. Notable hacker Jon "DVD Jon" Johansen has cracked the encryption technology of Apple's Airport Express, a development that will let programmers write tools that use the streaming technology provided in the product, independent of iTunes. Until now, users could use Airport Express only to stream their music to other devices (e.g., stereos) that use iTunes. The code release by DVD Jon will make it easier for third parties to tap into Airport Express. DVD Jon is famous for cracking the DEcrypt CSS (DeCSS) encryption technology that Hollywood uses to protect DVDs. He's also successfully cracked Apple's Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology for iTunes Music Store songs. Go DVD Jon
