How the mighty have fallen. Readers' Choice newcomer Vircom ModusMail won the Best Mail Server award with nearly 38 percent of readers' votes, knocking last year's winner, Microsoft Exchange Server, into second place this year. (ModusMail's sister product, Vircom ModusGate, won the Most Innovative Product award as well as several other awards.)

ModusMail uses a multilayered scanning process to provide advanced antispam and security features--benefits that might account for its popularity among our readers. Features include built-in antivirus protection and Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) support, an administration console that lets you delegate control on three levels (network, domain, and user), and Web-based email. Furthermore, Vircom claims a better-than-92-percent catch rate and 99.99 percent protection against false positives. The vendor's Web site offers several case studies, white papers, free trial downloads, and a Return on Investment (ROI) calculator to help you evaluate the product's potential in your environment.
