Q. What is the auto apply quota feature in the Windows Server 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM)?
A. In addition to the regular file system quota application that applies a specific quota to a volume or folder, you can assign a quota template to a folder and specify that quotas based on that template be automatically generated and applied to any subfolders of the auto-applied folder (including existing folders, not just new folders). This is particularly useful in the case of a folder containing users' home folders. The auto apply quota would be applied at the root containing the users' home folders, and as home folders are created under the folder, a new quota instance would automatically be created and applied to the new folders as well as to folders that already exist.
Q. How do I use the Windows Server 2003 R2 File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) to create an auto apply quota?
A. A. To create an auto apply quota for a volume or folder, perform these steps:
Start the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) File System Resource Manager snap-in (Start, Programs, Administrative Tools, File Server Resource Manager).
Expand the Quota Management branch and select Quotas.
In the Actions pane, select Create Quota (or right-click the details pane of the MMC and select Create Quota from the context menu).
Click Browse and select the volume or folder for the quota to apply to and click OK.
Select "Auto apply template and create quotas on existing and new subfolders" and select the quota template you want to apply to the volume or path.
Click Create.
Notice that the first item in the right pane of the figureshows the file path with an asterix (*) appended and a quota type with (Auto Apply) appended. This is the auto apply quota. Notice also the "d:usersmartian" entry, which was generated as a result of the auto apply quota even though the folder existed before the auto apply quota was set. As folders are created, quotas are automatically applied, as the figureshows.
If you modify the auto apply quota, you'll be prompted to choose whether to "Apply auto apply quota only to derived quotas that match the original auto apply quota," (i.e., only to entries with a value of yes under Match Template "Apply auto apply quota to all derived quotas," or "Do not apply auto apply quota to derived quotas," as the figureshows.
Whenever you modify an auto applied quota in any way, its "Match Template" status will change to No.
Q. How can I connect Microsoft Exchange Server to another mail system that hosts mailboxes for a certain SMTP namespace?
A. Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server contain several types of connectors. One of them, the SMTP connector, is useful for connecting to other mail systems (including other Exchange organizations) via SMTP. When you configure an Exchange connector, you define an address space ( i.e., the DNS name of the email domain--e.g. savilltech.com ) that restricts which traffic can be sent over the link:
Start Exchange System Manager (ESM--Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
Expand the Administrative Groups, then expand Routing groups until you see the "Connectors" branch.
Right click Connectors and select New, SMTP Connector.
Enter a descriptive name for the connector in the Name field (e.g., Exchange London to widget.test Notes), as the figureshows. Select "Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts" and in the text box, enter the DNS name of the other mail system or its IP address. If you enter the IP address, place it in square brackets (e.g., [192.168.1.50]). Under "Local bridgeheads," click Add.
Select the "Address Space" tab and click Add. In the displayed dialog box, select the address type (in this case, SMTP) and click OK. Enter the E-mail domain (e.g. *.widget.test) as the figure shows, and enter a cost between 1 and 100 (the lower the cost the higher the link's precedence).
If you want this connector to be available to the entire organization, select "Entire organization" under Connector's scope, as the figureshows. Then select the "Allow messages to be relayed to these domains" check box.
Navigate through the other tabs for options that might apply to your environment, then click OK.
Q. How can I add additional addresses for our Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server users?
A. To add additional email addresses to an Exchange organization, you need to change the recipient policy for the organization:
Start Exchange System Manager (ESM--Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
Expand Recipients and select Recipient Policies.
Right-click Default Policy and select Properties.
Select the "E-mail Addresses (Policy)" tab.
Click New.
From the address type list, select SMTP Address and click OK.
Enter the new address in the format @ (e.g., @widget.test). By default, "This Exchange Organization is responsible for all mail delivery to this address." is selected, which will make Exchange authoritative for that domain. If a mail is received for the new domain and no account is found, Exchange will send a Non Delivery Report (NDR) to the message originator; if you clear this box means, when a matching recipient can't be found, Exchange can forward the message to another system. Click OK
If this new address should be the primary address, select the new address and click "Set as Primary" (note that Exchange must be authoritative for the primary address).
Q. How can I stress test my Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 installation?
A. The Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Load Simulator (LoadSim), which you can download at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=92EB2EDC-3433-47CA-A5F8-0483C7DDEA85&displaylang=en , lets you simulate the performance load of a number of Messaging API (MAPI) clients. After you download the tool, extract and run loadsim.msi. Don't install the tool on the Exchange server; install it on a client that has Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 installed. The download includes a document that describes how to use and monitor the tool.
