NetScreen Technologies announced a new type of firewall, which the company has named the Deep Inspection firewall.  The firewall provides application-level intrusion protection along with stateful inspection capabilities.

NetScreen said the firwall can guard against more than 250 application-level and protocol-based attacks. To  accomplish that protection the firewall looks more closely at network traffic related to the HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, and DNS protocols. NetScreen will add deep-inspection technology for additional protocols in the future.

The product will become available in November and deliverable through the company's ScreenOS 5.0 updates, which is the underlying OS that NetScreen firewall and VPN appliances use.
