A. The MSN Messenger Service places itself in the run portion of the registry as %systemdrive%:Program FilesMessengermsmsgs.exe /background. If you want to remove MSN Messenger Service entirely, use the Add/Remove programs Control Panel applet. However if you simply want to stop the Messenger Service from starting, perform the following steps:

  1. Start regedit.exe.

  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun.

  3. Right-click the MSMSGS entry, and select Delete.

  4. Click Yes to the confirmation.
