Based on Snort 2.6, Hardcore IDS 1.0 looks like an easy way to quickly build a new IDS installation. The solution, announced at DefCon 14 in Las Vegas, consists of "a secured GNU/Linux operating system and intrusion detection system using Fedora Core 4 with Snort 2.6 and Aanval series 2 as an optional front-end". You can install it in one of three ways: Console only, sensor only, or console plus a sensor on one box. Check it out at the SLIPNET Web site.
