JSI Tip 9141. Windows 2000 does NOT detect your CD or DVD drive?

Windows 2000 may not recognize a CD or DVD drive under any of the following conditions:

  • The drive is powered on after the computer is started.

  • The drive is connected after the computer is started.

  • The drive is connected while a disc is in the drive.

NOTE: Device Manager (Devmgmt.msc) displays a yellow exclamation mark next to the device.

To workaround this behavior, use any of the following:

  • Disconnect and re-connect the drive.

  • Restart your computer.

To prevent this behavior:

  • Power on the drive before you power on the computer..

  • Make sure that there is no disc in the drive when you power it on.
