JSI Tip 5513. When you use Windows Update to update Windows, you receive 'Installation Failure. Unknown Error (-2147024770)'?

When you use Internet Explorer to visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and try to update Windows, you receive:

Installation Failure. Unknown Error (-2147024770)

This problem is symptomatic of damaged Internet Explorer files or if the Inseng.dll library is not registered.

To fix this problem, perform each of the following procedures until the problem is resolved:

Register Inseng.dll

1. Open a CMD prompt.

2. Type regsvr32 /u inseng.dll

3. Press OK when you receive the DllUnregisterServer in Inseng.dll succeeded message.

4. Type regsvr32 inseng.dll

5. Press OK when you receive the DllRegisterServer in Inseng.dll succeeded message.

6. Shutdown and restart Windows.

Repair Internet Explorer if you are running Windows 2000 without any Service Pack

1. Open a CMD prompt.

2. Type rundll32 setupwbv.dll, ie5maintenance

3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

4. Shutdown and restart Windows.

Repair Internet Explorer if you are running Windows 2000 with a Service Pack

1. Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs / Microsoft Internet Explorer version / Change/Remove.

2. Press Repair Internet Explorer.

3. Press OK.

4. Press Yes to confirm the repair.

5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

6. Shutdown and restart Windows.

Reinstall Internet Explorer

Reinstall your current version of Internet Explorer, or upgrade to the latest version, at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp
