When you try to dial-up with a PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) connection, you receive:

Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

This error is the result of having Multi-link negotiation turned on for a single-link connection, or having the dial-up connection security configuration improperly configured to the Require secured password option.

To fix the problem:

01. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.

02. Right-click the failing dial-up connection and press Properties.

03. Select the Networking tab.

04. Press the Settings button.

05. If the Negotiate multi-link for single link connections box is checked, clear it.

06. Press OK and OK.

07. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.

08. Double-click the failing connection. If you connect properly, exit this procedure.

09. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.

10. Right-click the failing dial-up connection and press Properties.

11. Select the Security tab.

12. Toggle the drop-down box to Allow unsecured password and press OK.

13. Start / Settings / Network and Dial-up Connections.

14. Double-click the failing connection and try to establish a dial-up connection.
