JSI Tip 3868. How do I uninstall and reinstall multimeadia codecs in Windows 2000?

You may wish to uninstall multimedia codecs (media control devices, audio codecs, etc..) when troubleshooting multimedia problems.

To uninstall audio codecs or media control devices:

01. Right-click My Computer and press Manage.

02. Double-click Device Manager.

03. On the View menu, select Show hidden devices.

04. Press the plus sign (+) to the left of Sound, video and game controllers.

05. Right-click Audio Codecs or Media Control Devices and then press Properties.

06. Select the Properties tab.

07. Select the item you wish to uninstall and press Remove.

When you restart your computer, Windows 2000 reinstalls the Microsoft PCM converter. To reinstall multimedia codecs:

01. Restart the computer.

02. Press F8 for advanced startup options.

03. Select Safe Mode and press ENTER.

04. After you logon, right-click My Computer and press Manage.

05. Double-click Device Manager.

06. On the View menu, select Show hidden devices.

07. Press the plus sign (+) to the left of Sound, video and game controllers.

08. Right-click Audio Codecs and Uninstall.

09. Press OK to confirm the removal, which may take a few minutes.

10. Close Computer Management.

11. Restart your computer.

12. After log on, Control Panel / Add/Remove Hardware / Next / Add/Troubleshoot a device / Next.

13. Add a new device / Next / Yes, search for new hardware / Next.

14. Audio Codecs should be listed.

15. Press Next and Finish.
