JSI Tip 3355. Windows 2000 prompts for User Name and Password when you use a Direct Cable connection to W9x?

When you connect Windows 2000 to Windows 9x via a Direct Cable connection, you are prompted for your User Name and Password, even if you enable the Guest account, configured with a null password? You receive:

Your credentials have failed remote network authentication. Enter a user name and password with access to the remote network domain.

It doesn't matter what you enter, Windows 2000 prompts you for your User Name, Password, and Domain Name, twice, and then issues Error 691: Access was denied because the username and/or password was invalid on the domain.

Even though you don't use password protection, and are NOT part of a domain, you still experience these messages?

To resolve this issue:

1. Right-click My Network Places, on the Windows 2000 computer, and press Properties.

2. Right-click the direct cable connection and press Properties.

3. On the Security tab, press Advanced.

4. Press Settings.

5. Select the Allow older MS-CHAP version for Windows 95 Servers check box and press OK and OK.

6. Close the Network and Dial-up Connections window.
