If you have spent considerable effort to arrange your desktop, you probably get upset when your icons randomly loose position.

The Windows NT 4.0 Resource kit, through Supplement II, had a solution for this:

1. Copy Layout.dll to the %SystemRoot%System32 folder.

2. Double-click the Layout.reg file provided.

After installing LAYOUT, a right click on My Computer, Network Neighborhood (My Network Places), or the Recycle Bin would allow you to select Save Desktop Icon Layout. If you subsequently needed to restore icon positions, right clicking would provide a Restore Desktop Icon Layout.

This Windows NT 4.0 tool works just fine in Windows 2000.
