I receive error 4301 and 4165 in the system log when I try and start the WINS service.

A. If when you attempt to start WINS you get the following event logs:

Event ID: 4301
Source: Wins
Description: The computer running the WINS server does not have a valid address.When WINS requested an address, it received 0.0.0.0 as the address. NOTE: WINSbinds to the first adapter in a machine with more than one adapter bound toTCP/IP. Check the binding order of adapters and make sure the first one has avalid IP address for the WINS server.

Event ID: 4165
Source: Wins
Description: WINS has encountered an error that caused it to shut down.

This is caused by the machine not having TCP/IP configured/installed andbound to a network card. Check you IP configuration and ensure you have a validIP address:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-up Connections

  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and if an Enable option is shown click it, if it says 'Disable' go to the next step and DON'T click Disable

  3. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties

  4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties

  5. Click Use the following IP address

  6. Type the appropriate entries in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway boxes, click OK, and then click OK
