How do I enable NTLM 2.0 support in Windows 98?

A. Windows 2000 supplies a directory services client which can beinstalled as described in 'Q. How do I install the Windows 9x directory services client?'.

To verify you have the required version, right click onc:windowsSystemSecur32.dll in Explorer and choose Properties. 
The Version tab should read Microsoft Win32 Security Services (Export Version) or MicrosoftWin32 Security Services (US and Canada Only).

To enable NTLM 2.0 after installing the directory services client on Windows9x machines perform the following on the domain controllers:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)

  2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLsa

  3. Double click LMCompatibilityLevel (if it does not exist create of type REG_DWORD)

  4. Set to 3

  5. Click OK

  6. Reboot
