Word centralizes font formats in the Font dialog box:

The numerous options in the Font dialog box are organized in three tabs:

  • Font: the font typeface, style, size, color, underline, and effects.

  • Character Spacing: the kerning, scale, and other typographic settings. It is rare that you will need (or want) to change these font properties.

  • Text animation: animated effects, such as blinking text. These font effects make sense only if a document will be viewed on screen.

To access the Font dialog box, do one of the following:

  • Right-click selected text and choose Font.

  • Choose Format → Font.

  • Ctrl+D.

Word provides a number of shortcuts to commonly-used font formats. The first are the font buttons on the Formatting toolbar:

Make sure the tolls are visible by choosing View ? Toolbars and checking Formatting.

There are keyboard shortcuts to apply font formats as well:

  • CTRL+B, I, U turn Bold, Italic, Underline on and off.

  • Ctrl+Space to reset all font formats in the selected text to the default font of the paragraph style. In other words, Ctrl+Space "strips off" all directly-applied font formats.
