You can manage the behavior of AutoCorrect by setting exceptions. Exceptions allow you to leave an AutoCorrect feature enabled, so that you can leverage the feature to create more accurate documents. When you add an exception, you specify a word that you do not want changed by that feature.

  1. Choose Tools → AutoCorrect Options.

  2. Click the AutoCorrect tab.

  3. Click Exceptions.

  4. Add the word to the tab for rule you want "ignored" for that word.

  5. Click OK.

The tabs in the AutoCorrect Exceptions dialog box are:

  • First Letter. Words in the First Letter list cause word to ignore the capitalization of the following word. For example, the sentence:

Fly By Night Travel, inc. welcomes you to our event.

would normally cause Word to capitalize "Welcomes," since the period after "inc." would be interpreted as the end of a sentence. However, "inc." is an exception, so the following word is not capitalized.

  • INitial CAps. Words in this list are not corrected for having two initial caps.

  • Other Corrections. Words in this list are not corrected automatically, regardless of what typos they may appear to contain.
