Q. The Automated System Recovery restore on Windows Server 2003 fails?

When you use ASR (Automated System Recovery) on Windows Server 2003 to restore, the operation fails.The ASR.log file contains:

The recovery application "ntbackup recover /1 /sifpath=C:WINDOWSrepairasr.sif" returned an error code 0x1f. Since this indicates an unrecoverable error, ASR cannot continue on this machine.

The Backup.log file contains:

Warning: Unable to create "c:SFUusrlocallibperl55.6.1Pod" - skipped.
Reason: The system cannot find the path specified.

This behavior will occur when Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX or SUA (Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications) is installed using the Change the default behavior to case sensitive option, which creates a pod symbolic link. The Backup program cannot identify case-sensitive file names.

To workaround this behavior:

1. Start / All Programs / Windows Services for UNIX and press C Shell.

2. In C Shell, type the following command to delete the pod symbolic link:

rm /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/pod

3. Run an ASR backup by pressing Start / Run / ntbackup / OK and pressing the Automated System Recovery Wizard button after inserting a floppy disk.

4. Run an ASR restore.

5. Open C Shell to re-create the pod symbolic link:

ln -s /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/Pod /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.6.1/pod
