With Windows Vista, how do I connect to the Internet via my Bluetooth phone?
March 4, 2007
A. Vista has a built-in Bluetooth stack that makes it easy to connect to the Internet via your data-compatible phone. The first step is to connect the phone to your Vista computer:
Start the Bluetooth Devices Control Panel applet (Start, Control Panel, Bluetooth Devices).
Under the Devices tab, click Add.
The Bluetooth Add Device wizard will open. Select the "My device is setup and ready to be found" check box and click Next. (Make sure your phone is configured to be discoverable to other devices, which is not normally the default.)
The Bluetooth wizard will now search for devices in its proximity. Once the search is complete, select your device from the list and click Next, as the figureshows.
You will be prompted for a passkey; leave the default of "Choose a passkey for me" and click Next.
On the phone, you'll see a message that a computer wants a partnership. Click OK and enter the passkey that's displayed on the computer. Click Finish on the PC wizard to finish the partnership setup.
Next, you need to configure the dial-up connection. To do so, perform these steps:
Start the Network and Sharing Center (Start, Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center).
Select "Set up a connection or network."
Select "Set up a dial-up connection" from the list of network types, as the figureshows.
Select the Bluetooth modem entry.
Enter details for the connection. In the case of Cingular, all you need to enter is a number of "*99#", then click Connect, as the figureshows.
You're now connected to the Internet via your phone.
