A. The EICAR group has created a standard file for testing the effectiveness of antivirus software. The test file appears to be a virus to these antivirus products, but is actually a harmless stream of 68 ASCII characters:
X5O!P%@AP[4PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
The test file is available on the EICAR Web site in the following four formats:
A virus in a Web page
A virus in a downloadable text file
A virus in a downloadable zip file
A virus in a zip file in a downloadable zip file
