Verizon Starts Delivering Windows Phone Updates, Icon in Early 2015

Well, we thought this would never happen, but Verizon Wireless today began delivering Windows Phone 8.1 and subsequent updates, like Update 1 and the Lumia Denim firmware. The only bad news is that the Icon isn't among the first batch of Verizon phones to get these updates, but Verizon says it will be onboard with updates in early 2015.

Today, what we see are two relatively ancient Windows Phone handsets—the Nokia Lumia 928 and Nokia Lumia 822—getting updated to Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 with Lumia Denim. So if you're among the 7 or 8 people still using such a device, check for updates.

Given the angst we've seen from Lumia Icon users, Microsoft was nice enough to address what's happening there, too: The Icon will receive Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 and Lumia Denim "in early 2015."

Also, Verizon will issue Windows Phone 8.1 with Update 1 to the HTC One M8 with Windows and the Samsung ATIV SE "very soon." I take that to mean by the end of this year.

The big question is, why has this taken so long?

Obviously, Verizon is the blocker here. But here's the official word from Microsoft, which I've reworded slightly for readability:

"We work really closely with carriers like Verizon to make sure these upgrades for Windows Phones bring the best experience possible for customers. These upgrades go through extensive lab testing to ensure quality and mitigate any network-dependent issues. Because of this, delivery timelines for upgrades can vary carrier to carrier (and even by device)."

Verizon has provided PDF-based documentation for the software updates for the Lumia 928 and Lumia 822. They explain the various benefits of Windows Phone 8.1 with Update 1 and Lumia Denim, some of which actually debuted back in Windows Phone 8.1 in April for the rest of the planet.

Verizon users, your nightmare is coming to close. But don't worry, I'm sure they'll get you again with the Windows 10 upgrade.
