How do I force a refresh on RMS client templates?

Q. I'm using Azure RMS and have added new templates however they are not showing as available on my client machines, how can I force a refresh?

A. If you have added new templates and what to make them appear straight away on clients you need to wipe the cache of templates on the machine. This is done by performing the following:

  1. Delete the registry cache at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftMSIPCTemplate

  2. Delete the file system cache at %localappdata%MicrosoftMSIPCTemplates (e.g. C:UsersjohnAppDataLocalMicrosoftMSIPCTemplates)

  3. Delete the explorer right click cache at HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREClassesMicrosoft.IPViewerChildMenu

It will then recheck when you try to protect something and you will get the new templates.

Normally the MSIPC should check each day for new templates however while Office will show the new templates the right click context menu will still only show the existing templates until a document is protected via the context menu at which point it will start showing new templates.
