Fix DVD and Blu-ray devices in error state on your Windows machine

Q. Any Blu-Ray or DVD drive in my machine no longer works with device manager showing the registry is corrupt. What can I do?

A. I recently had this exact problem after uninstalling some software and no Blu-Ray drives would work even ones via USB. In Device Manager the device showed in a warning state and the detailed message showed the registry was corrupt.

The problem was the software uninstalled had left behind some of its filters which no longer existed the solution was the following:

  1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe)

  2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

  3. Delete values UpperFilters and LowerFilters

  4. In Device Manager uninstall the device then scan for hardware changes

  5. The drive then worked!
