First Look: Lenovo ThinkStation P700 Workstation

This week, I’m digging into testing and reviewing a monster of a workstation, the Lenovo ThinkStation P700. For the longest time, I’ve prided myself on being highly mobile, but after the first few hours with the P700, I can remember the value I experienced in my previous tech life. There’s just something deeply elemental about a solid, top performing workstation that just can’t be matched with a tablet or a laptop.

The ThinkStation P700 belongs to the completely redesigned P Series family of Lenovo’s desktop workstations. It offers a huge number of customizable options, allowing you to build what you need. The P700 is designed for industries where a top performer is needed. Industries such as engineering, architectural design, complex development, CAD/CAM, animation, financial, medical imaging, or energy could benefit from this workstation. Gamers, of course, would also be interested.

Here’s the configuration I’ll be working with:

  • Processor: Intel Xeon E5-2640W v3 processor (2.60Ghz)

  • Operating System: Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  • Graphics: NVIDIA Quadro K5200 (8GB)

  • Storage: 1 x 240GB SSD SATA / 2 x PCIe M.2 256GB SATA RAID 0

  • Mouse & Keyboard: USB Keyboard and Mouse

  • Memory: 8GB x 4 (32GB)

  • Audio: Support RealTek ALC662 codec

  • Network: 2x Gigabit Ethernet

  • Optical Drive: DVD Multiburner

  • Front Ports: 4 x USB 3.0

  • Rear Ports:  4 x USB 2.0, 4 x USB 3.0, 2 x Ethernet (RJ-45), 3 x analog audio ports, 2 x PS/2

  • Slots: 12 DIMMs, 8 PCI/PCIe slots, Two FLEX connectors

  • Media Card Reader: 9-in-1 media card reader

Shhh…don’t tell Lenovo, but I’ll be testing the Windows 10 upgrade on this bad boy.

The full review should be posted in the next couple weeks (I have a lot of travel this month).
