With the largest computer industry merger complete, Compaq has begun thelong, painful process of integrating Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) into the company. The first step, figuring out the management structure,leaves former Digital CEO Robert Palmer out in the cold; Palmer will beretiring "with mixed emotions" following the massive merger. In the newmanagement scheme, only three of the twelve people that report directly toCompaq CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer hail from Digital.
