German colocation and interconnection specialist ancotel GmbH has acquired a data center facility on Long Island and plans to develop the site as a connectivity hub for the New York market.
Frankfurt-based ancotel has bought LIDARC (Long Island Data and Recovery Center), a carrier-neutral colocation and interconnection facility located at 1025 Old Country Road in Westbury, N.Y.
The LIDARC facility is a 200,000 square foot building with 45,000 square feet of available data center space. The project was announced in 2007, touting a "Manhattan Bypass Network" via submarine cables from Brooklyn to Staten Island and Staten Island to New Jersey.
"ancotel is known as one of the most successful companies for telehousing and interconnection services in the world," says John Reynolds, Managing Director of ancotel USA and former Managing Director of LIDARC. "The company is committed to its investment on Long Island. They have plans to transform this facility into a critical meet-me-point for companies, cable operators, carriers, service providers and international companies."
ancotel believes submarine cable connectivity can unlock the potential for Long Island to prosper as a colocation market, even in the shadow of one of the nation's busiest data center and high-frequency trading markets.
"We have been looking at the U.S. data center market for quite some time now," said K.-J. Orth, Managing Director of ancotel GmbH and Chief Marketing Officer of ancotel USA, LLC. "With this acquisition, our proven expertise will enable this facility, located in the most eastern point in the United States, to offer direct interconnectivity to and between trans-Atlantic, Caribbean and Latin American submarine cable systems as well as leading nationwide and global network operators. As a result, ancotel USA will usher in a new dimension of global network interconnection capabilities."
ancotel will provide more information about its plans in a press conference tomorrow at the Westbury site. Founded in 1999, ancotel is headquartered in Frankfurt with branches in London, Hong Kong and New York City (Telx) in addition to Westbury.
