Commvault, a long-time leader in the backup and recovery market, is offering three service-based offerings designed to meet the growing desire of companies to consume technology as a service instead of purchasing and maintaining products on their own. With these services, users can access Commvault’s cloud-based data protection services on demand, paying for only what they use.

Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery-as-a-service (B&RaaS) is essentially the entire Backup & Recovery offering delivered as a service. It includes backup and recovery of all files, apps and virtual machines, along with failover, replication and full encryption and endpoint data protection.

Along with making its flagship product available as a service, Commvault announced as-a-service options for virtual machines and native cloud applications. B&RaaS for Virtual Machines protects the data backup, recovery, computing and storage consumption of VMs on AWS and Microsoft Azure public clouds. B&RaaS for Native Cloud Applications provides backup and recovery services for the data of native cloud apps, such as software-as-a-service offerings like Salesforce and Microsoft Office 365.

Offering its products as a service makes good business sense for Commvault, says Steve Scully, a senior analyst at Evaluator Group.

“Commvault has been developing enterprise data protection solutions for 20 years and has a technology-rich set of features and capabilities,” he said. “But ... they are sometimes seen as a legacy solution that can be hard to use, especially for customers new to Commvault. With this move, they are trying to make Commvault's products easier to deploy and use, and they align with industry trends around data protection.”

Commvault also announced two new cloud-ready appliances. The Commvault HyperScale Appliance (model HS3300)--which integrates server, storage and Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery--is a higher-capacity appliance providing up to 262 TB of usable capacity. It’s scale-out infrastructure is designed to meet larger workloads than its existing HyperScale Appliance for the midmarket.

Commvault also announced the Remote Office Appliance designed for remote and branch offices. The devices come with 5 TB or 15 TB of usable capacity, which allows organizations to protect data locally and copy data to the cloud or data center while managing it centrally and simplifying administration, according to the company. The appliance will appeal to remote offices that don’t need the greater resilience of the larger configurations, Scully said. “They are also much more affordable, and the fully integrated hardware and configured software of all of these appliances allow customers to deploy the full Commvault capabilities in a very short time.”
