SAS Working Group Teams with STA

The Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Working Group has announced an agreement with the SCSI Trade Association (STA). As part of the agreement, the STA will define the marketing requirements for the SAS specification and will promote the technology to the industry. Compaq, IBM, LSI Logic, Maxtor, and Seagate Technology formed the SAS Working Group late last year as an independent, open-industry consortium with the goal of developing a new interconnect specification for SCSI. The STA, established in 1995, is an industry group that supports and promotes SCSI technology.

Current SAS Working Group members include Adaptec, Compaq, Crossroads Systems, Dell, Eurologic Systems, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Hitachi America, IBM, I-TECH, KnowledgeTek, LSI Logic, Marvell Technology Group, Maxtor, Molex, QLogic, Seagate, ServerWorks, Silicon Image, and Western Digital. Current STA members include ACARD Technology, Adaptec, Amphenol, Compaq, Dallas Semiconductor, IBM, LSI Logic, Linfinity Microelectronics, Maxtor, Mylex, QLogic, Quantum, Seagate, Texas Instruments (TI), and Wieson Electronic.

SAS enhances the Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) by adding SCSI robustness and versatility. STA will transfer the development of the new protocol to the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) in May 2002 and will approve the protocol as a standard within 12 months after that date. INCITS develops ANSI standards. The T10 committee, which is part of the INCITS, will lead the efforts and work to develop advances in Parallel SCSI. Products based on SAS should be available in 2004.
