How do I install the MSN Messenger Service client?
June 3, 2001
A. On Windows XP machines, the MSN Messenger client is installed by default. However, this default client doesn't support Exchange messaging, so you need to install the Exchange version. You can install the Exchange MSN client on the following OSs:
Windows XP
Windows 2000
Windows NT 4.0
Windows Me/Windows 9x (if the OS is Windows 95, you must ensure that Winsock 2.0 is installed)
The client is supplied on the Exchange Server CD-ROM, or you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/downloads/2000/IMclient.asp.
Run mmssetup.exe (either from the InstmsgI386ClientUsa directory on the CD-ROM or from the downloaded file).
Click Yes to the license agreement.
Click Next to the MSN Welcome screen.
Enter your email address, and click Next. (Your MSN Messenger email logon might be the domain plus the name of the IM server—e.g., [email protected]—because the part to the right of the at symbol—@—is basically the IM server's Fully Qualified Domain Name—FQDN.)

Click Finish.
IM uses Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) authentication, which a proxy server will block. Make sure you configure your Web browser so that it doesn't use the proxy server for the IM server communication:
Start Internet Explorer (IE).
From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
Select the Connections tab.
Click LAN Settings.
Under Proxy server, click Advanced.
In the Exceptions section, enter the IM server's FQDN.
Click OK to all the dialog boxes.
Restart the MSN client.
If you don't take these steps, you'll experience authentication failures.
