A. If you only need basic information for NT-based workstations, youcan extract this from the print server's event log. The event log will recordeach job, including the page count. However, the page count is always 0 forWin98, Win95, Win3.x and non-Windows workstations, as well as for print jobsfrom console or MS-DOS applications -- and it does not take into account thenumber of copies requested by the user.

To enable the auditing of prints perform the following:

  1. Start the Printers Start menu options (Start - Settings - Printers)

  2. From the File menu select "Server Properties"

  3. Click the Advanced tab

  4. Check the "Log spooler information events" box and click OK

  5. You will need to restart the server for the auditing to start (or stop andstart the print spool service)

Once auditing is enabled they can be viewed using the Event Viewerapplication, System Log. To view only print logs select "FilterEvents" from the view menu and set the Source to Print. Each print jobwill be logged with its size in bytes and number of pages.

If you need to have accurate page counts, you will need to purchase athird-party package for monitoring and managing the printing activities. Onesuch package is Printer Accounting Server from Software Metrics (http://www.metrics.com/); it works with awide variety of printer types and network connections to accurately track theprinting.
