After upgrading from NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 the timeout in boot.ini has been reset to 30.

A. The timeout value which is the amount of time you have to pick youroperating system during system startup is defined in the BOOT.INI file. Duringan upgrade to 2000 this value is reset to 30 no matter what you may have set toin the past. To change back to your preferred value perform the following:

  1. Right-click My Computer on the desktop, and then click Properties.

  2. On the Advanced tab, click Startup and Recovery.

  3. Change the value in the Display list of operating systems for N seconds to the value you want, in seconds.

  4. Click OK, and then click OK.

You can also do this by directly editing boot.ini file and change the timeoutvalue to the number of seconds you require:

[boot loader]
timeout=10

Remember the file boot.ini is a read-only file so you will first need to setit as write enabled:

  1. c:> attrib boot.ini -r -s -h

  2. Edit boot.ini

  3. c:> attrib boot.ini +r +s +h (to put the file settings back(
