Windows Defender for Windows 10 Getting Advanced Capabilities

Last year I had the opportunity to be given a tour through the Microsoft Cybercrime Center on the company’s Redmond campus. Not only was the tour eye-opening, but it was highly educational. It was interesting to me to see how deeply earnest Microsoft is for detecting threats and the lengths it goes to protect its customers. Microsoft has an entire team that works Internationally to uncover some of the most scandalous and harmful. It’s like a real-world CSI – at least that was my take.

And, Microsoft is still serious about it, it seems.

Called Windows Defender Advanced Protection, the new service has been in testing with early adopters for some time and is already protecting 500,000 endpoints. And, like most of the company’s most current products, the service melds client technology with the Cloud.

With a combination of client technology built into Windows 10 and a robust cloud service, it will help detect threats that have made it past other defenses, provide enterprises with information to investigate the breach across endpoints, and offer response recommendations.

Microsoft has not provided a date when the service will be made available to all, just that an upgrade to Windows 10 is the required piece to ensure computers can take advantage of the service. For those tasked with managing a multitude of computers in the business, no investment in local infrastructure is needed. Additionally, the service is powered by a Cloud backend, so no on-premises hardware is or ongoing maintenance is required.
