Windows 10 Version 1511 (Current Branch) Updated to Build 10586.494

Although the next major update to Windows 10, the Anniversary Update, is still three weeks away ,that does not stop the Windows as a Service process to keep the Current Branch (CB) build of Windows 10 updated and secure.

Today is July's Patch Tuesday and there were four major updates released for Windows 10 CB Build 10586.xxx, including a couple of security related patches and a cumulative update to bring Windows 10 CB up to Build 10586.494.

The cumulative update, KB3172985, addresses nine security related updates for Windows 10 Version 1511 and provides quality improvements as noted below:

  • Improved reliability of Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer 11, Windows Explorer, Miracast, and Windows kernel.

  • Fixed issue with some people seeing a black screen instead of the lock screen when resuming from connected standby.

  • Fixed issue with DirectAccess where the Disconnect button appears in some cases when the connection isn't fully established.

  • Fixed issue where local user accounts weren't locked after a number of failed sign in attempts.

  • Improved support for video playback in certain apps that didn't render video correctly after resuming from sleep.

  • Fixed issue with Windows Phone losing user authentication certificates after upgrading to Windows 10 Mobile in some cases.

  • Improved support of the backup settings of apps on Windows 10 Mobile.

  • Fixed issue where Microsoft Silverlight based apps wouldn't install on Windows 10 Mobile after joining Azure Active Directory.

  • Fixed additional issues in .NET, Windows Kernel, Windows Update, authentication, revised daylight saving time, support for PDF files, Bluetooth, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, networking, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

  • Security updates for Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, Kernel Mode Drivers, Windows Kernel, .NET Framework, Windows Secure Kernel Mode, and Microsoft Print Spooler.

No new features this month for the CB build of Windows 10 but then those will be arriving next month in the Anniversary Update.

Alongside of today's cumulative update there were these patches as well:

Servicing stack update for Windows 10 Version 1511: July 12, 2016 (KB3173428)

MS16-093: Security update for Adobe Flash Player: July 12, 2016 (KB3174060)

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)

There have been several reports across social media that these downloads are taking much longer than normal with some freezing up at various points in the download process. My advice is to hang right and let the system do its thing. If it times out, you will see an error and be asked to start the update process again.

It is likely just server overload since the issue is fairly widespread.

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.
