Q: How can I see my Windows 8.1 machine's Windows Experience Index (WEI)?

A: The Windows Experience Index (WEI) was a number that showed your machine's overall experience based on memory, processor, disk, and graphics. In Windows 7 and Windows 8, it was available as part of the properties of your computer (System control panel applet). The WEI is no longer shown; however, its results can still be accessed.

Navigate to C:WindowsPerformanceWinSATDataStore and open a file Format.Assessment (Initial/Recent).WinSAT.xml. Near the top of the file is a WinSPR section with all the specific values and the overall score. (See screen shot below.)

If you don't have the files or they are out-of-date, you can force an evaluation by running the command

winsat formal

from an elevated command prompt. This creates new files based on current data. It also gives details at the command prompt of the testing process.
