System Center 2012 SP1 Management Server OS Support

Q: What OSs are supported for running the System Center 2012 SP1 Management Servers?

A: System Center 2012 took all the separate products that were previously under the System Center family name and made them a single product (including some extra components). However, each component had very different supportability for the OS the management server ran on.

System Center 2012 SP1 has made it very simple. Every management server role is supported on Windows Server 2012 and Windows 2008 R2 SP1, with two exceptions:

  • VMM 2012 SP1 Management Server requires Windows Server 2012 (as it uses SMI-S components of the Windows 2012 OS).

  • SCSM 2012 SP1 Web Portal requires Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 (as it uses SharePoint 2010, which isn't supported on Windows Server 2012).

Additionally the Service Provider Foundation requires Windows 2012; however, this is not a standard part of System Center and is aimed at hosting partners.

This supportability is summarized in table form by Microsoft at the Technet site.
