Q: How do I stop IE 10 from automatically updating?

A: Internet Explorer has a number of compatibility settings that helps Internet Explorer know when to emulate previous versions of Internet Explorer and also which sites can use Flash in the Metro version of Internet Explorer (and on the desktop version of Internet Explorer for Windows RT). If you have customized the whitelist you may want to stop Microsoft from updating and therefore overwriting your changes.

  1. Open the desktop version of Internet Explorer

  2. From the Tools menu (press the Alt key to display the menu) select Compatibility View settings.

  3. Unselect the "Download updated compatibility lists from Microsoft" and click Close.

If you do turn off the update, then additional sites that have new compatibility settings and Flash support will not be applied to your Internet Explorer environment.
