Set Command Prompt on Windows 8.1 Start Power Menu

Q: How do I get the Command Prompt back on the Start power menu instead of Windows PowerShell?

A: If you right-click the Start button in Windows 8.1, a power menu is displayed (the same menu was displayed in Windows 8 if you right-clicked in the bottom left corner to display the Start icon). This power menu links to very useful tools (see screen shot below), including links to Windows PowerShell and an elevated Windows PowerShell (Admin).

In Windows 8, the menu offered links to the Command Prompt. To change the links back to the Command Prompt, do the following:

  1. Right-click the Task Bar and select Properties.

  2. Select the Navigation tab.

  3. Under the Corner navigation area, deselect the option Replace Command Prompt with Windows PowerShell in the menu when I right-click the lower-left corner or press Windows key+X.

  4. Click OK.
