The Challenge

Throughout many years of consulting I've had clients who needed help setting up support for a variety of OSs across many locations as a result of a merger or acquisition involving a company running on an OS other than Windows. The first step is to incorporate the new company into the email system. The second step is to bring all locations up on Windows, and many IT directors spend months or even years supporting multiple OSs before taking this second step.

I recently heard from an IT director who had moved two acquired companies from NetWare to Windows. He told me there were many computers and users that couldn't join Windows Active Directory (AD) and he couldn't find the cause. He wrote, "I know I overlooked some detail, but I can't find it. I'm sure it's right in front of my face, but I'm missing it."

It IS in front of his face, as long as the NIC settings are displayed. What two changes do you have to make to NIC settings to make sure the transition from NetWare to Windows is complete?

The Solution

You must remove the following services from the NIC settings:
