Q: I heard that BitLocker in Windows 8 can save the recovery key to SkyDrive, so why don't I have this option?

The option in Windows 8 BitLocker to save the recovery key to SkyDrive is available only in these situations.

A: BitLocker in Windows 8 did add support to back up a BitLocker recovery key to Microsoft SkyDrive. (See screen shot below.) However, this is only available provided the following is true:

  • The computer isn't a member of a domain.

  • The user's account is connected to a Windows Live ID.

Backup option, BitLocker

This means if your computer is part of a domain, then you can't save to SkyDrive (however, in that case a better option is to save the BitLocker recovery key to Active Directory anyway or use Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring).
