Q: Because the Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 Release Previews require an internet connection, is that true of the Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 RTMs?

A: For Windows 8 RTM and Windows Server 2012 RTM, an internet connection is highly recommended. It's used for key functions such as the following:

  • Activation

  • Windows Update (including Features on Demand)

  • Updated Help

It's not mandatory, though. Windows 8 RTM and Windows Server 2012 RTM can still be activated by phone, and an internal Windows Update solution can be used for patching and adding features not locally on disk.
