A: Windows Server 10 introduces a new checkpoint option. This production checkpoint—unlike traditional checkpoints, which capture the current disk, memory, and device state—calls the VSS component within the guest virtual machine to create an application-consistent backup (although the term data-consistent is also used), which creates a checkpoint consistent with the state that would be the result if a backup were taken. Because the data stored in the checkpoint is now application-consistent, there's no need to also save the memory and device state. This means that if a production snapshot is applied, the virtual machine will start from a powered-off state and boot from that consistent disk point.
