Microsoft TechRewards Program Shutting Down on 06 January 2017

Microsoft's TechRewards program is intended to help IT Pros and developers hone their skills through a series of challenges using Microsoft related technologies.

Each challenge that was completed would result in an award of points that could then be collected and cashed in on various items such as gift cards, donations to charity and subscriptions to various IT and developer tools.

With the planned closure of the program, Microsoft is notifying participants and encouraging them to redeem their collected points no later than 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time on 06 January 2017.

They are also including two sets of guidelines as the closure approaches:

  • Redeem your Points in our Rewards Catalogue no later than January 6, 2017.

    • Sign into your Microsoft TechRewards account.

    • Navigate to the Rewards page located on the left hand side of the screen.

    • Select the rewards you wish to redeem.

    • Follow the on screen instructions to redeem your reward.

  • Share Microsoft TechRewards badges you want to save to your social media profiles (Facebook or Twitter) no later than January 6, 2017.

    • Sign into your Microsoft TechRewards account.

    • Navigate to your profile by clicking the profile tab on the left hand side of the screen.

    • Select Badges tab.

    • Choose a badge to share and click the share button.

As of today all current challenges have been removed from the site so the only thing left to do is spend your points if you have them.

They also recommend checking out other Microsoft sources for continuing to learn more about IT and Windows development by visiting sites such as Channel 9, Microsoft Virtual Academy, Visual Studio Dev Essentials, and IT Pro Cloud Essentials.

The whole concept for a program like TechRewards was to gamify the learning process but apparently chasing points might not be the best way to really learn about technology.

You can read more about the closure here.

But, wait...there's probably more so be sure to follow me on Twitter and Google+.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.

I previously hosted the Observed Tech PODCAST for 10 years and 317 episodes and now host a new podcast called Faith, Tech, and Space.

I began contributing to Penton Technology websites in January 2015 and in April 2017 I was hired as the Senior Content Producer for Penton Technology which is now Informa Tech. In that role, I contribute to ITPro Today and cover operating systems, enterprise technology, and productivity.
