Microsoft Releases Windows 10 Build 14291 for PC and Mobile Windows Insiders

Today has been a busy day for the folks on the Microsoft Windows team.

A little more than 8 hours ago they shipped Windows 10 Mobile Build 10586.164 as the Current Branch (CB) build for eligible Windows Phone 8.1 devices, only 24 handsets in total can now run the CB build of Windows 10 for now, and they modified their Windows Insider Program restricting participants to only those on the same 24 handsets.

So immediately they are active on social media, Microsoft Answers Forums and other support sites monitoring the upgrade roll out plus dealing with unhappy Windows Phone 8.1 users that would not be getting Windows 10 Mobile on their devices.

Just a handful of hours later they then announced the release of Windows 10 Build 14291 a new testing build from the Redstone 1 development branch for PC and Mobile testers in the Fast Ring. On the mobile side it will only be available for the six handsets that were available commercially with Windows 10 pre-installed. Of course, on the PC side that new build is open to all Insiders without restriction.

So now there are likely some disappointed owners of newly upgraded Windows 10 Mobile handsets that still do not get an opportunity to dive into testing Windows 10 Redstone mobile but in a few weeks that gate will be opened for them once the Windows team gets those 18 devices provisioned into the Redstone development branch.

Most definitely an exhausting up and down day for all involved.

However, if you still have some energy be sure to visit our new Windows Insider Build Trackers for PC and Mobile so that you can learn more about Build 14291.

Some of the highlights include:

  • First implementation of extensions in Microsoft Edge (PC)

  • Pinned Tabs and Paste and Go enhancements in Microsoft Edge (PC)

  • Updated Maps app (PC/Mobile)

  • Merging of Windows Insider Hub and Windows Feedback app into one central app called Feedback Hub (PC/Mobile)

  • Updated Alarms & Clock app (PC/Mobile)

Let us know how your testing progresses.
