Microsoft Cloud App Security Reaches General Availability

Last November, Microsoft's CEO delivered a keynote in Washington, DC, where he discussed a new approach Microsoft was going to take when it came to security in the mobile-first, cloud-first world.

His address focused on three tenants for this focus on security:

Protect, Detect, Respond.

"We must better Protect all endpoints – from sensors and datacenters to identities and SaaS applications. We must move faster to Detect threats using the scale and intelligence of the cloud, machine learning and behavioral monitoring.   We must Respond more quickly and comprehensively, and empower our customers with insights that are actionable and holistic."

In February of this year Bret Arsenault, Microsoft's Chief Information Security Officer, provided a progress report on those efforts and he shared 13 different areas where they had made enhancements to their services for protecting corporate data and assets.

One of those was that Microsoft Cloud App Security would become available in April 2016.

Well today that became reality as Microsoft formally announced the General Availability of the service which was based on technology they acquired when they purchased Adallon for $320 million last year.

So what will Microsoft's Cloud App Security bring to the table?

  • App Discovery: Cloud App Security identifies all cloud applications in your network—from all devices—and provides risk scoring and ongoing risk assessment and analytics

  • Data Control: With special focus on sanctioned apps, you can set granular controls and policies for data sharing and loss prevention (DLP) leveraging API-based integration. You can use either out-of-the box policies or build and customize your own

  • Threat Protection: Cloud App Security provides threat protection for your cloud applications leveraging user behavioral analytics and anomaly detection

You can learn more about the cloud based apps that are supported with Microsoft's Cloud App Security service and how to get started using it over on the Cyber Trust Blog.

I served for 29 plus years in the U.S. Navy and retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer in November 2011. My work background in the Navy was telecommunications related so my hobby of computers fit well with what I did for the Navy. I consider myself a tech geek and enjoy most things in that arena.

My first website – AnotherWin95.com – came online in 1995. Back then I used GeoCities Web Hosting for it and WindowsObserver.com is the result of the work I have done on that site since 1995.

In January 2010 my community contributions were recognized by Microsoft when I received my first Most Valuable Professional (MVP) Award for the Windows Operating System. Since then I have been renewed as a Microsoft MVP each subsequent year since that initial award. I am also a member of the inaugural group of Windows Insider MVPs which began in 2016.

I previously hosted the Observed Tech PODCAST for 10 years and 317 episodes and now host a new podcast called Faith, Tech, and Space.

I began contributing to Penton Technology websites in January 2015 and in April 2017 I was hired as the Senior Content Producer for Penton Technology which is now Informa Tech. In that role, I contribute to ITPro Today and cover operating systems, enterprise technology, and productivity.
