Although SQL Server 2008 R2 wasn’t considered to be a major release, it included several big new features such as support for 64 processors and 256 cores, multiserver management, improved data consistency with Master Data Services, and, of course, self-service business intelligence (BI) with PowerPivot for Excel and PowerPivot for SharePoint.
