Key command console updates in Windows 10

Q. What are some of the key updates to the command console in Windows 10?

A. Windows 10 features a new command console which is used by both command prompt and PowerShell. This new console features a number of key features which are documented at http://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2014/10/07/console-improvements-in-the-windows-10-technical-preview/. The new console is enabled by default but can be disabled in favor of the legacy console if required (which requires restarting the command window).

Some of the best features are:

  • Transparency through the CTRL + SHIFT + (plus/minus or mouse scroll wheel) or can be set through the Colors tab of the console properties via the Opacity slider

  • Automatic DPI scaling when using TrueType font for display

  • Dynamic windows resize support which means as the window is resized the content is also resize to take advantage of the new window size

  • Word wrap which is useful with the dynamic resize

  • Easy text selection and editing
