Industry Bytes: Veeam Software’s new Availability Suite v8 Improves Virtualization Uptime

Best known for their VMware backup products, this past May 20th Veeam Software announced the release of their new Veeam Availability Suite. The Veeam Availability Suite is the bundling of Veeam’s popular Veeam Backup and Replication product with their Veeam One virtualization management product.

Veeam’s CEO Ratmir Timashev briefed me about some of the most important highlights of both Veeam’s growth and direction as a business as well as the new features found in the Availability Suites. Ratmir shared how Veeam has been growing quickly. Veeam surpassed its 100,000 customer milestone and its overall growth in 2013 was 58% over 2012. Veeam now has more than 1,400 employees. Ratmir also noted that Hyper-V was by far the company’s fastest growth segment with Hyper-V revues growing at 247% from 2012 to 2013 and that most of the Hyper-V sales tended to go to businesses with 200 seats or less.

Ratmir told me that Veeam’s goal is not just backup for virtual machine. Instead, Veeam is expanded their focus to always-on availability for businesses. Business now have a 24 x7 need for data access from everywhere and the Veeams Availability Suite is designed to provide a recovery time and point objectives (RTPO) of less than 15 minutes without the complexity and cost of competing solutions. Some of the important new features in Veeam’s Availability Suite include:

  • NetApp Integration – Let’s you create backups from NetApp SnapShot every 15 minutes or less with no impact on the production environment.

  • EMC Data Domain Boost integration – Reduces your backup window by enabling up to 10 times faster backup file transformation and up to 50 percent faster full backups.

  • Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SQL – Let’s you restore individual databases including point-in-time recovery through transaction log backup and replay. There are also Veeam Explorers for Exchange and AD.

  • Replication enhancements—New built-in WAN acceleration improves the performance of VM backup replication between sites.

Veeam’s new Availability Suite v8 will be available in Q3, 2014. Pricing is based per CPU socket and it is set at $1,100 for Standard Edition, $1,550 for Enterprise and $2,300 for Enterprise Plus edition. These prices included the first year of maintenance and support.
