First Look: Patch Tuesday for December 2015, 8 Critical and 4 Important

Rich told everyone today that this is the last Patch Tuesday of the year. However, we’ve become accustomed to a varying cadence of patch releases this past year, so I reminded him that we have at least a second one – maybe more. So, let’s just call today the first Patch Tuesday of December and cross our fingers that it’s the last. I’m a realist.

It’s been a rough year for Microsoft’s update teams, which in turn has made it a rough year for patch administrators. I’m sure both groups will be happy to see a good result this month, with hopes that Microsoft’s new servicing model, introduced with Windows 10, can help turn the tide in patch quality and update pain.

Here’s what’s coming your way today:

  • MS15-135 Security Update for Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers to Address Elevation of Privilege Important

  • MS15-134 Security Update for Windows Media Center to Address Remote Code Execution Important

  • MS15-133 Security Update for Windows PGM to Address Elevation of Privilege Important

  • MS15-132 Security Update for Microsoft Windows to Address Remote Code Execution Important

  • MS15-131 Security Update for Microsoft Office to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-130 Security Update for Microsoft Uniscribe to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-129 Security Update for Silverlight to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-128 Security Update for Microsoft Graphics Component to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-127 Security Update for Microsoft Windows DNS to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-126 Cumulative Security Update for JScript and VBScript to Address Remote Code Execution Critical

  • MS15-125 Cumulative Security Update for Microsoft Edge Critical

  • MS15-124 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer Critical

We’ll stop back to dig deeper into each of these, but wanted to give you a heads up. Also today, Windows 10 1511 upgrade bits are available for your WSUS servers and the System Center team has chosen this landmark day to announce the general availability of the next version of Configuration Manager. Not meant to complicate Patch Tuesday, of course.
