Q: What features in Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V require using a Generation 2 virtual machine (VM)?
A: No features in Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V require the new UEFI-based Generation 2 VM other than the capabilities that are inherent to the Generation 2 VM itself--that is, Secure Boot, boot from SCSI controller, and boot from synthetic network adapter.
Although other features might have certain requirements--for example, dynamic VHDX requires the virtual hard disk (VHDX) file to be connected to the SCSI controller--there is no reliance on Generation 2 VMs over Generation 1 VMs.
