Microsoft has released beta 1 versions of two new software development kits (SDKs) for its .NET suite. The .NET Framework SDK and the .NET Mobile Web SDK are available for download at http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp.The .NET Framework SDK beta 1 helps developers write, build, and test .NET applications. The SDK includes ASP.NET, the Common Language Runtime (CLR), documentation, samples, tools, and command-line compilers. This beta software runs on Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Windows Me and requires Internet Explorer 5.5 and Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6. Microsoft recommends that you install .NET Framework SDK beta 1 only on nonproduction machines. The company also warns SQL Server 2000 users that installing the SDK samples can overwrite the Pubs and Northwind sample databases. The Late-Breaking Known Issues site at http://beta.visualstudio.net/net/sdk/issues provides a workaround for this problem. The .NET Mobile Web SDK beta 1 works with ASP.NET and .NET Framework to help you build mobile Web applications for cell phones and Pocket PCs. ASP.NET is the next generation of Active Server Pages (ASP), which was formerly called ASP+. The SDK includes the Mobile Web Forms runtime, a set of mobile server controls, a QuickStart tutorial, and developer documentation.
